Description

ICD-10 is a radically upgraded diagnostic and procedural medical coding system that, by law, must be implemented throughout the healthcare industry by October 1, 2013.  This new coding system is very different than the version currently in use, and it's important to start preparing for and implementing the massive changes to the existing coding system.

This online program includes:

  • A comprehensive overview of the objectives, edits, and changes within the soon-to-be released International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition(ICD-10)
  • Training in use of the new ICD-10 diagnostic and procedure codes for insurance billing and reimbursement, including an in-depth review of the ICD-10-CM (diagnoses) and ICD-10-PCS (procedures) coding manuals, guidelines, instructional notes, conventions, and coding steps
  • The methodology and a template for planning and implementing ICD-10 in healthcare facilities
  • An explanation of requirements for upgrading existing software applications, including claims editors, billing and claims, and electronic data interchange clearinghouses
  • Explanations of how to prepare and develop policy and procedure manual changes and meet staff training needs and requirements

Upon registering, you're given an initial six months to complete the program. Should you need more time, you may request a six-month extension at no additional charge.

Upon successful completion of this program, you'll be able to:

  • Understand the development history of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)
  • Define the differences between the ICD and the ICD-9-CM (Clinical Modification).
  • Distinguish between ICD-10-CM (Clinical Modification) and ICD-10-PCS (Procedural Coding System)
  • Identify the developers and cooperating parties involved in the creation of the ICD-10, ICD-10-CM, and ICD-10-PCS
  • Describe the four major objectives that guided the development of ICD-10, both -CM and -PCS
  • Identify the layout, terminology, and punctuation of the Alphabetic Index and Tabular List of the ICD-10-CM code book
  • Understand the Guidelines and Conventions as they apply to the 21 chapters of the Tabular List
  • Apply the steps for accurate and appropriate diagnostic coding by body system, signs and symptoms, external cause, and other chapter content designations.
  • Identify the questions that must be answered before code assignment.
  • Understand the Guidelines, Conventions, and Instructional Notes as they apply to the procedure codes found in ICD-10-CM.
  • Apply the steps for accurate and appropriate procedural coding using the ICD-10-CM code book
  • Identify the questions that must be answered before code assignment.
  • Understand the impacts to medical documentation as a result of the implementation of ICD-10
  • Describe the implementation issues for training and personnel, and information systems
  • Identify the planning and implementation steps necessary to prepare for ICD-10's go-live date of October 1, 2013
